Report: Low pay and income inequality in Scotland: a living wage

29 July 2010

This report considers the effect that a living wage could have on low-paid workers in the public sector.  it provides background information on public sector wages and discusses the definition of a living wage.   It estimates the effect that the introduction of a living wage of £7 an hour in the public sector would have on income inequality and considers why a living wage may not affect the distribution of household income.  It also suggests that the introduction of a living wage in the public sector would not have a considerable effect on the proportion of income accruing to households in the bottom three income deciles.
