What Works in Tackling Poverty

The learning network has worked in collaboration with the Poverty Alliance to publish a collection of case studies demonstrating effective practice in tackling poverty.

Case Studies

  • Scotcash is a Community Development Financial Institution in Glasgow offering affordable loans and support to people who face barriers to accessing credit elsewhere.
  • Cash in Your Pocket Partnership promotes and co-ordinates financial inclusion in Aberdeen City, expanding into Aberdeenshire through a single referral portal.
  • The Financial Inclusion in Housing Argyll partnership has been delivering financial inclusion projects in Argyll and Bute across a range of Housing Associations since 2007.
  • The South-West Edinburgh Rent Arrears Early Intervention (SWERAEI) project is a pilot partnership that was formed in 2009.
  • Fife Gingerbread provides accessible, approachable and non-judgmental support, advice and information to lone parents with children of all ages, from all backgrounds and walks of life.
  • Routes out of Prison is a partnership approach to working with prisoners before they are released from prison, and for a number of weeks after.
  • Cranhill Community Project is a holistic centre of excellence based in Cranhill Parish Church. In partnership with voluntary and statutory organisations, the project tackles poverty and social exclusion.
  • The EPiC Project supports people with experience of poverty to influence the development of anti poverty policy in Scotland.
  • Independent Living Scotland works with people living with a disability to improve their life chances and thereby tackle poverty.
  • Move On is a charity which supports young vulnerable people in danger of becoming homeless. They provide debt and employability advice, mentoring and literacy and numeracy tuturing.
  • Change Works is an organisations working to improve the environment and support people living in fuel poverty.
  • West Dunbartonshire Council - Improving Education for Children Living in Poverty demonstrates the positive role schools can play in tackling poverty, promoting healthy lifestyles and supporting parental engagement in a child's learning and development.
