Falkirk Council presents its first Falkirk Employability Award

20 July 2012

Falkirk Council presented their first ever Nationally recognised employability awards at an informal presentation ceremony at the end of June 2012. The Falkirk Employability Award is a customised award using national Units from the Scottish Qualifications Authority and sets a standard of work readiness in response to calls from employers to improve the functional core skills of young people entering the world of work.

This award is being delivered in partnership with Forth Valley College and a range of private and third sector providers. On Thursday the first 40 young people to complete the award were presented with their certificates of achievement, a further 240 young people are currently undertaking the award.

Councillor Dennis Goldie Convenor of the Economic Strategy and Development Committee said," Falkirk Council is widely recognised as being at the forefront of initiatives supporting young people into sustainable employment. The Falkirk Employability Award is another example where Falkirk is setting a standard and leading the way and Scottish Government and other Local Authorities are now looking to adopt this approach."

Scottish Government in their draft Youth Employment strategy highlighted the need to develop a National Certificate of Work Readiness and the award developed by Falkirk Council has been widely promoted as the gold standard approach.

Councillor Goldie went on to say, "we are extremely proud of our track record in supporting our young people and this year we have committed an additional £850,000 to help support youth employment and are in the process of recruiting additional Apprentices as well as starting a new jobs programme for unemployed Graduates, the Falkirk Employability Award is a key component of our quality standards approach to matching young people with jobs."

Falkirk Council also offers a free expert support service for employers, including a free vacancy matching service to help you find the correct candidate and there are many work ready, enthusiastic young people seeking opportunities. There is also financial support available from Falkirk Council for employers to help meet the costs of recruiting and employing young people.
