Top North Lanarkshire businesses come together to help create jobs

21 July 2011

Four companies in the North Lanarkshire area have become the first ambassadors for a council-led employability partnership which helps businesses find, train and recruit suitable candidates free of charge.

Public services provider Amey, roofing and rendering company GMG Contractors, chartered accountant Watson and Co and Aspirare Recruitment Scotland were announced as the first employers to sign up to the North Lanarkshire's Working Ambassador Programme two weeks ago.

The programme, launched in 2008, has already helped 1800 local businesses recruit over 3400 employees from the ranks of the long-term unemployed, single parents and school leavers.

By bringing together North Lanarkshire Council's employment service Routes to Work local colleges and social support services, the service offers a one-stop shop where local people can access suitable training and education opportunities before receiving help to find jobs to suit their newly-acquired skills and qualifications.

Each of the ambassadors at the Ravenscraig event gave a presentation on their experience of recruiting through North Lanarkshire's Working and encouraged companies who attended to see the business benefits of recruiting through the service.

Maureen McConachie, Head of Regeneration Services at North Lanarkshire Council, said: "We're proud to welcome these four very different employers to the North Lanarkshire's Working Ambassador Programme."Each of them has made a real difference by giving local people, many of whom have been unemployed for a significant length of time or lacked formal training, the chance to prove themselves in the workplace and begin to build a better life for themselves and their families."

Douglas Millar, Chief Executive of North Lanarkshire Chamber of Commerce, said: "I welcome the introduction of the Ambassador Programme. Each of the first ambassadors has a very positive story to tell and I'm sure they will do great work in encouraging other employers to get involved with North Lanarkshire's Working."
